Surfcasting or Longlining

Surfcasting and longing are popular along the length of Tirohanga Beach right in front of the Camp.

The beach extends for miles in both directions so it's easy to find a quiet section to send out a long line to one of the shellfish or worm beds which produce good size snapper.

Good surfcasting can be had on a change of light or leading up to high tide as snapper come into feed. Reading the beach well and finding a hole or gut to fish into enhances your prospects.

There are miles and miles of beach to choose to setup for the day and just go fishing!

Trout Fishing

We're fortunate to have a number quality trout rivers right at our back doorstep. The Waioeka is a top class fishery with rainbow and browns right throughout it's length during most parts of the year. SH2 (to Gisbourne) runs right next to the river which allows good access to the middle and lower reaches.

Fish can be clearly seen by pulling over and looking down on them from the road side, it's then a case of finding your access down into the river and targeting them. The most successful method in summer is a stealthy approach from behind with small nymphs cast in front of the trout and a nice dead drift.

Good numbers of smaller fish can be found in the Otara and Pakihi rivers which are even closer to the park.

The middle reaches of the Waioeka are easily fished from SH2 to Gisbourne, make sure and target the riffley aerated water at the head of the pools in sumer!
